Raymond C. Somers photograph collection, 1865-1993 (bulk 1890-1940)

1,163 black & white and color photographs, 890 black & white negatives (4x5, 5x7, and 35 mm negatives), 48 black & white glass plate negatives, cyanotypes, duplicates and photocopies, and copies from pages in Mr. Somers' books. Most of the images were taken in Cache Valley (Utah and Idaho, Logan and Logan Canyon, Utah and the Bear River Range, Box Elder County and Southeastern Idaho). A few are from Wyoming, Hawaii, and California. Subjects include the Utah State Agricultural and Brigham Young Colleges of Logan, Cardon Jewelry company and family, Stanford University, the Logan L.D.S. Temples and Tabernacle, Hampton's Ford, fishing, hunting, and camping, railroads, the Jim Bridger Centennial Celebration, the 145th Artillery Unit, businesses and buildings of Cache Valley, parades, portraits of Logan residents and homes, the Peterson farm in Petersboro, agricultural scenes, the Hercules Power Plant, Shoshone Indians, and Bear River Canyon. Most images were taken during 1890-1940.

The Thatcher Opera House (Logan, Utah) was built by George W. Thatcher, who had managed the Salt Lake Theater Company. The 800-seat theater opened in September 1890, occupying the top two floors of a new bank building. The theater was used for traveling operas, concerts, plays, vaudeville shows, movies, boxing, and other activities until April 17, 1912, when it was destroyed by a fire which started in an adjacent store. Ray Somers was born on Nov. 28, 1917, in Garland, Utah. Somers graduated from the Bear River High School in 1936 and attended the Utah State Agricultural College in 1937.
